The Most Important Change to Iowa OWI Law in Ten Years

On July 1, 2018, a new law went into effect regarding driving privileges in the State of Iowa following an OWI allegation.

House File 2338 amended Iowa Code 321J in regard to obtaining and using a Temporary Restricted License (TRL).

This new law eliminated the mandatory waiting periods, or “hard suspensions,” following test failures and test refusals. Further, the law allows the TRL to be used for many more purposes. Previously, the scope of use was narrow, largely restricted to travel between home and work, or home and school. Now a TRL may be used for any purpose for which a regular license may be used.

Please talk to your defense lawyer if you are facing, or serving a revocation for an OWI-related matter. For more information, the Iowa DOT has published memo #18-06.
